Dasavatharam is the new movie featuring Kamalhaasan in ten different roles. The film is directed by K.S.Ravi Kumar. Actress Asin Thottumkal also plays a dual role. Other important casts in the film Dasavatharam are Mallika Sherawat, Jayaprada, Napolean, Santhana Bharathi, and M S Bhasker.
Dasavatharam is produced by V Ravichandran. Art director is Prabhakar and the Music is done by Himesh Reshammiya. Ravi Varman is the Cinematographer and the Dance choreographer is Brinda. The story of the film is penned by Kamalhaasan. The screenplay and dialogue are also done by Kamal himself.
Kamal Haasan is in ten roles as Rangaraja Nambi, Govind Ramasaamy, George Bush, Avtar Singh, Christian Fletcher, Shinghen Narahasi, Krishnaveni, Vincent Poovaraagan, Kalifullah Khan and Balaram Naidu. This is a world record that an actor playing so many roles at a time in world cinema itself. Director K.S.Ravi Kumar and Kamal Haasan are coming together for the fourth time in this film.
The female lead roles were always a confusion from the beginning. Many of the heroines were opted out, or forced to opt out of the film due to date clashes or rivalries in the industry. Finally, Asin Thottumkal is assigned the leading lady role. Later, she was assigned two distinct roles in the movie Dasavatharam. Mallika Sherawat acts in the second lead role. Dasavatharam is her first film project in Tamil.
The major supporting actors for the film are Napoleon, Jayaprada, Nagesh, P. Vasu, K. R. Vijaya and M. S. Baskar. Many of the American supporting actors were also roped into other roles in the film. Shriya Sharan and A.R.Rahman opted out of this film because of the request made by producers of "Sivaji: The Boss". Sivaji, casting Rajnikanth was made as rival to Dasavatharam.
The film was shot at various locations across the world which include America, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand. The Indian locations include Mahabalipuram, Chennai Airport, Chengelpet, Taramani Film City, Nehru Stadium and Uthandi, a coastal village. KamalHaasan's role as a foreigner was shot in casinos in and around Las Vegas and Orlando.
There are many controversies also about the film and its crew. Many of the actors and technicians were replaced due to many problems. One of the heroines Mallika Sherawat faced objections from Hindu Makkal Katchi, a splinter group of the Hindu Munnani, for inappropriate attire and behaviour during the Audio lauch of "Dasavatharam", in which Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi was also present. Recently, the film was also criticized by Vishwa Hindu Parishad, which claimed that the film has portrayed the clash between Saivism and Vaishnavism which prevailed in the 16th century, in an objectionable manner.
The film's trailer was released publicly on April 23, 2008, a day after it was shown to special guests, which included M. Karunanidhi at a screen. The first exclusive screening of the film, prior to release, was held on the morning of the audio launch on April 25, 2008, to visiting guests Jackie Chan, Mammooty and Amitabh Bachchan. |
